Ancient Capital · 六朝古都
Six dynasties of history, the world's longest city wall and a river of lanterns.
Nanjing — "Southern Capital" — served as China's capital under six dynasties and the early Ming. Its 600-year-old city wall is still the longest of its kind in the world, and you can walk or cycle long sections of it.
It is also a city for reflection: the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on Purple Mountain and the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall tell the story of modern China. In the evening, the Qinhuai River and Confucius Temple glow with lanterns.
Nanjing South station is 1–1.5 hours from Shanghai and around 1 hour from Suzhou or Hangzhou by high-speed train.
